Beacon Financial Strategies to Sponsor Financial Literacy Event
Triangle - Raleigh, NC, September 25, 2009 -- Beacon Financial Strategies, a fee-only financial planning and wealth management firm, in conjunction with the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA) will sponsor a financial literacy event for students in grades 9-12, parents, and teachers from Wake County and surrounding areas.

Attendees will learn from experienced CPA volunteers and North Carolina State University’s Masters of Accounting students about how to get headed in the right financial direction. With sessions covering a variety of personal financial planning topics, attendees are sure to gain practical financial guidance that will no doubt strengthen their financial condition.

“We are excited to participate in an event that is focused solely on the advancement of financial literacy,” said Chip Hymiller, CFP® and owner of Beacon Financial Strategies.  “It is a very worthy cause given current economic conditions and the trend of increasing personal debt levels for college students,” added Erin Campbell, CPA/PFS, CFP® also an owner of Beacon Financial Strategies.

According to college financier Sallie Mae, the average college freshman carried over $2,000 in credit card debt in 2008 and by their senior year, the average student carries more than $4,000 in revolving credit card debt.  In addition, the average college student today carries 50% more debt than students in 2004.  “These trends are very disturbing.  If we can reach a few of these students and change the way they view money now, it could save them thousands of dollars over the course of their lifetimes,” said Hymiller.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at Southeast Raleigh High School on Saturday October 3, 2009.  Registration for the event begins at 9:30am and teachers are eligible to earn continuing education credits.  Visit www.ncacpa.org/makingcents.htm for detailed information and a schedule of the day’s events.
